Dad Caught Beating Daughters On Video Indicted On Child Abuse Charges

April 4, 2013 in News by D.L. Chandler

As previously reported, the father who took out some frustration in the form of whipping his misbehaving daughters with a cable wire is now facing criminal charges for the act. The Dayton, Oh. father has been accused of allegedly beating his children with a video cable from his television and DVD system.

ABC-22 reports that Greg Horn, 35, was indicted after a video reportedly featuring him and the girls surfaced online and went viral.  He has been indicted on charges of child endangering and corporeal punishment. The girls were visiting their father and according to police, Horn beat them for allegedly sneaking out of the house. It was earlier said that Horn was furious at his daughters for recording a “twerk” dance video to post on Facebook. That detail has not been officially confirmed.

Police were alerted to Horn's residence by the girls' mother, who noticed that one of the girls had welts on her thighs along with open wounds. Curiously enough, the charges come during the first week of Child Abuse Awareness Month.  An official from Montgomery County Child Services spoke on the dangers of child abuse with ABC-22.

“The goal is to always keep kids safe," said Kevin Lavoie from Montgomery County Children Services. "We don't want people to have any reservations about calling 224- KIDS and letting us know about a circumstance or a concern."

The graphic video displayed the brutal beating, causing some viewers to respond negatively while others praised the act as good parenting. For those calling for justice, their call was eventually heard. According to Mugshotsonline.com, Horn has been in trouble with the law before after an arrest for parole violation back in December.

Horn is scheduled in court on April 16 for an arraignment hearing.

Fox News Reveals Name Of 16-Year-Old Steubenville R@pe Victim

March 19, 2013 in News by Latifah Muhammad (@TheLatifah)

Fox News revealed the identity of the 16-year-old Steubenville, Ohio r@pe victim. The teen girl's name has remained under wraps  because shes is a minor, with most outlets respecting her privacy.

The assault trial divided the town as two of its star football players, Trent Mays and Ma'lik Richmond, stood accused of r-ping the teen while she was intoxicated, in August of last year. They were found guilty Sunday (March 17), but the verdict hasn't yet allowed the victim the privacy she seeks.

From Raw Story:

Fox News on Monday aired the name of a underage victim of a disturbing rape in Steubenville, Ohio.

During correspondent Mike Tobin's report about the guilty verdicts in the Steubenville rape case on Fox News' America's Newsroom, the girl's first name was broadcast without being censored.

“We have not known, really, how the victim is doing, Mike,” host Martha MacCallum told Tobin. “Is there any information on that today?”

“Well, a relative tells me that she spends a lot of time in her room,” Tobin explained. “She has been back out playing sports, and through it all — you'll be surprised to learn — she made the honor roll one more time.”

“A family representative says the remorse coming from the football players came too late,” the correspondent added. “We saw their reaction yesterday.”

At that point, the report cut to footage of one of the r-pists, 17-year-old Trent Mays, apologizing to the victim in court on Sunday.

“I would truly like to apologize to [redacted], her family, my family and the community,” Mays said. “No picture [of the rape] should have been sent around, let alone even taken.”
Raw Story has redacted the victim's first name from this report and the video below, but Fox News did not.

A Fox News editor's note added to an Associated Press report published on Sunday insisted that the conservative network would not name the minors charged in the case.

In addition to having her name revealed on a national news platform, the young victim has received threats . Two girls were charged with threatening the girl after learning of the guilty verdict.

According to the Seattle Times, the girls, ages 15 and 16, posted “threatening comments on Twitter” after the guilty verdict was handed down. Both teens are being held in juvenile detention, and are expected to appear in court today.

Steubenville Football Stars Found Guilty Of R@ping Girl As College Student Listened Next Door [PHOTOS]

March 18, 2013 in News by Latifah Muhammad (@TheLatifah)

A guilty verdict was handed down Sunday (March 17) in a r@pe case that rocked the town of Steubenville, Ohio. Two star football players, accused of assaulting a teen girl, while a college student listened next door, could remain behind bars until they are 21.

Suspects, and Trent Mays, 17, and Ma'lik Richmond, 16,were both found guilty of assaulting the intoxicated teen in August of last year. Richmond wept as the guilty verdict was read, before apologizing to the family of the victim. "I'm sorry, for putting you guys through this. I'm sorry," he said through tears.

From CNN:

The case attracted the attention of bloggers -- and even the loosely organized hacking group, Anonymous -- who questioned everything from the behavior of the football team to the integrity of the investigation.

Judge Thomas Lipps announced his decision after reviewing evidence presented over four days of testimony in the case against Mays and Richmond, who were tried as juveniles.

Mays was also found guilty of disseminating a nude photo of a minor.

The ruling brings an end to a trial that gained media attention for its lurid text messages, cell phone pictures and videos, and social media posts surrounding the sexual abuse of the girl.

A slue of damaging text messages admitted into evidence proved that the girl had no recollection of what happened the night she was attacked.

Although she was not present during final court proceedings, her mother read a statement after the verdict. "Human compassion is not taught by a teacher, a coach or a parent. It is a God-given gift instilled in all of us," she said.  "You displayed not only a lack of this compassion, but a lack of any moral code."

Bob Fitzsimmons, a lawyer for the girl, said that she was  "really happy" that the five-day trial, has ended. "Remember, she is a 16-year-old girl still and she's a high school student," he explained. "She just wants to get back with her normal life, as does the family. It is a big relief to her at this point."

Judge Lipps is said to have handed down the sentence to the boys to make an example out of the teens, given the controversy behind the case and the town's treatment football stars, who are often held in high esteem.

Richmond has to spend at least a year in custody, Mays must serve at least two years, but both are in fear of being behind bars until 21. They have each been given credit for time served, and must stay away from the victim until they reach 21.

The young man who heard the incident, and recorded himself laughing and saying that the victim was "so r@ped right now," will not face criminal charges since he didn't actually witness anything.

Teen, Alexis Cayson, Responsible For Crash That Killed 6 Had No License [PHOTOS]

March 12, 2013 in News by D.L. Chandler

The investigation into a car crash that killed six teens has taken a turn after investigators discovered the 19-year-old driver did not have a license. According to a report from the Associated Press, the SUV they were riding in was reported stolen as well.

The two surviving passengers in the crash say that Alexis Cayson, the driver, sped on the roadway recklessly and was warned to slow down. Brian Henry, 18, and Asher Lewis, 15, barely escaped with their lives after Cayson lost control of the SUV and plunged into a pond.  State Highway Patrol authorities gathered additional statements from the pair, who both said Cayson sped around a curve before the vehicle hit a guardrail and flipped.

“I blanked out for a little bit and then the truck was upside-down in the water,” said Henry to a state trooper. “There was air in the truck but it was filling with water. I used my right elbow to break out the back window.”

Cayson and five boys, Andrique Bennett, 14; Brandon Murray, 14; and 15-year-olds Kirklan Behner, Ramone White and Daylan Ray, perished at the scene of the crash right off a two-lane, 35-mph roadway. The eight passengers, all hailing from the town of Warren, did not wear seat belts. Excessive speed is the preliminary reason given for the crash. Yesterday (March 11), the owner of the 1998 Honda Passport reported the vehicle stolen. The teens had no prior relationship with the owner, or permission to operate the SUV.

Friends and family of the deceased have erected a makeshift memorial at the site of the accident. Lisa Williamson, the mother of one of Brandon Murray, expressed grief over the loss of her son. "If only he had listened," said Williamson. "I told him, 'Don't you go nowhere.' But they're kids."

Check out the pictures in the gallery of the crashed vehicle and some of the victims in the gallery. A warning: the images may be disturbing.

106-Year-Old Ohio Woman Set To Get High School Diploma

March 1, 2013 in News by Latifah Muhammad (@TheLatifah)

Reba Williams epitomizes the saying “better late than never.” At age 106, she is prepping to  receive her high school diploma.

Born in 1907 in Germantown, Pa., she moved to the central Ohio town of Mount Vernon as a child. It was there that she attended high school, and would have belonged to the graduating class of 1925 or 1926.  She never received her diploma because she refused to complete a final assignment which called for her to read a particular book. The school was willing to allow Williams to read the book over the summer to get her diploma, but she declined. “[She] said the book was not worth reading and she'd already read it once and didn't like it and wasn't going to read it again,” her daughter, Lavata Williams, said. “My grandmother told me the story more than once.”

Not graduating never stopped Williams from finding work. She held down a job as a cook at Malabar Farm from 1943 to 1957. The location stands as the state's only working farm and park.

Today she lives with her daughter, who is 78.

A retired English teacher raised an inquiry into Williams' diploma, after reading a story about her this year. “It seemed like a nice thing to do and although I never knew her personally it seemed like something that was overdue,” said Fred Daily, whose wife was the one that reached out to the Mount Vernon Board of Education for Williams. The board made the motion to approve the disbursement of the diploma on Feb. 18.

It is not clear yet if Williams will be presented the diploma via a public ceremony, or if it will be mailed to her.

Ohio Landlord Whipped Tenant With Belt For Paying Rent Late

February 21, 2013 in News by Latifah Muhammad (@TheLatifah)

In most cases a person not paying their rent on time results in a late fee, in this situation, it led to a belt whipping. Ron Kronenberger, of Waynesville, Ohio, admitted to whipping his tenant's "bare butt" for not paying his rent on time.

He now faces an assault charge for the action.

Back in January, the 59-year-old beat his 29-year-old victim for falling behind more than $2,000 on his rent. Just to make sure his point was understood, Kronerberger reportedly told the man to bend over and hold onto a chair, before saying "if you're going to act like a child, I'm going to treat you like one." He was hit four times, which left marks on his body.

When questioned by reporters as to why the man would stick around to get beaten, Waynesville Police Chief Gary Copeland said the victim was "scared and just wanted to get it over with."

Kronenberger remains free despite missing his initial arraignment. He is due in court today to face the misdemeanor charge.

Ohio Players Leader Leroy “Sugarfoot” Bonner Dead At 69

January 28, 2013 in News by D.L. Chandler

Leroy “Sugarfoot” Bonner, leader of the legendary Funk band The Ohio Players, passed away over the weekend. A posting on Bonner's Facebook fan page brought forth the unfortunate news on Sunday.

From Sugarfoot's Facebook page:

Yesterday, Leroy “Sugarfoot” Bonner passed away quietly in his hometown of Trotwood-Dayton, OH. While his family, friends, colleagues, and fans mourn his passing they celebrate fondly his memory, music, and legacy.

Sugarfoot, or Foot, or Sugar, was the founding and cornerstone artistic talent of OHIO PLAYERS and the face and sound of the OHIO PLAYERS brand, which he knit together and launched in 1964 with former members of The Ohio Untouchables. With a career spanning 56 years, he passed barely short of his 70th birthday.

Bonner, a native of Hamilton, would join The Ohio Players in the late 1960's after working with another band in the town of Dayton, and the group made a splash on the music charts in the 70s with hits like “Love Rollercoaster,” “Skin Tight,” “Fire” and other tracks. Marshall “Rock” Jones, bass player and founding Ohio Players member, is reeling from the loss. “It's kind of crazy. I'm still feeling fragile,” said Jones to the Associated Press. “I sit back now, and it was all a brilliant blaze.”

Keith Harrison of Ohio bands FAZE-O and The Dazz Band praised Bonner in an interview with the Dayton Daily News. “He was a great person with a lot of wisdom not just in music, but in life,” said Harrison. “He was an extraordinary person.”

Hip-Hop groups owe a great debt to The Ohio Players, as their music helped form the instrumentals for a bevy of classics. A Tribe Called Quest used the Ohio Players track “Ecstasy” for the “Scenario (Remix)” and DJ Clark Kent used another portion when The Notorious B.I.G. joined Jay-Z for their back-and-forth duo “Brooklyn's Finest” on Hov's debut album Reasonable Doubt. Kendrick Lamar (“m.A.A.d City”), Outkast (“Crumblin' Erb”) and De La Soul (“Me Myself and I”) are among many others who have used samples from the Ohio Players vaults.

Rest in peace to Leroy “Sugarfoot” Bonner.
