In a strange and tragic twist of events, the girlfriend of John Crawford III, the 22-year-old unarmed Black man killed by Ohio cops inside a Wal-Mart last year, died in a car accident on New Year’s Day.
Tasha Thomas died along with the male driver of the car that she was riding in yesterday. The driver was reportedly speeding when the vehicle collided with a pole. Both victims were thrown from the vehicle.
According to witness Joe Lewis, Thomas was still breathing moments after the wreck. “I tried to use a towel to cover her up but the police and the ambulance were already there,” he said.
She was taken to a hospital where she was pronounced dead, Sgt. Creige Coleman confirmed, while praising first responders for their efforts. “They did a great job at trying to save that person, but we were later told that that person did pass away at the hospital,” he announced calling the fatal incident a “delicate” and “very troubling” scene.
Thomas, 26, was subjected to an unrelenting interrogation by police after Crawford’s death last August. Authorities threatened to throw her in jail if she didn’t give up information on where Crawford got the toy gun he was brandishing inside the store. Thomas repeatedly denied any knowledge of how he got the weapon. She was questioned for over an hour, all while bawling crying, before she was finally told that Crawford had been killed.
Crawford’s death came after officers responded to a call about a man carrying an unconcealed weapon in the store, even though it’s legal to carry firearms in the state of Ohio.
Though the cops who killed Crawford did not face criminal charges, the family filed a lawsuit against Ohio police and Wal-Mart.
